Depending on where in San Diego a person is arrested in will determine where he or she is in jail. When the San Diego County Sheriffs or Marshals arrest a person they will typically be taken to the San Diego County Jail, Vista Detention Center or for females the Las Colinas Detention Center. If a person is arrested by a San Diego City Police Department it is likely they are being detained at that same city jail or have been transferred to one of the county jail facilities.

Most of the San Diego city jails and police departments have small jails / detention facilities and do not hold inmates for very long. Once a city jail gets overcrowded they will transfer inmates to one of the Main County Jail facilities. When posting bail for an inmate at a city jail or police department you must act quickly. The first thing to do is call a Bail Bond Company in San Diego to help postpone the inmate being transferred to County Jail. Often times if a jail or police department knows that a Bail Agent is on their way over to post bail they will hold the person there and not transfer them to County Jail. Most city jails and police departments take 10-15 minutes to release a person once the bond is posted.

If a person is transferred to the San Diego County Jail it usually becomes an 8-12 hour process. It takes an inmate approximately 4-6 hours to get booked in, and another 2-6 hours to get released once the bond is posted at the jail.

A common misconception is that bail can only be posted after the inmate sees a judge. This is only true in some cases. Most defendants have a bail amount which has been pre-determined by the San Diego Bail Schedule.
