Depending on which city in Los Angeles County a person is arrested in will determine where he or she is in custody. When the LA County Sheriffs or Marshals arrest a person they will typically be taken to the Los Angeles County Jail or one of the many LA County Sheriffs substations. If a person is arrested by the Los Angeles Police Department it is likely they are being detained at a city jail.

Most of the Los Angeles city jails and police departments have small jails / detention facilities and do not hold inmates for very long. Once a city jail gets overcrowded they transfer inmates to one of the Main LA County Jail facilities. When posting bail for an inmate at a city jail or police department you must act quickly. The first thing to do is call a Bail Bond Company that services Los Angeles to help postpone the inmate getting transferred to the LA County Jail. Often times if a jail or police department knows that a Bail Agent is on their way over to post bail they will hold the person there and not transfer them to County Jail. Most city jails and police departments take 15-20 minutes to release a person once they receive the bond.

If a person is transferred to the Los Angeles County Jail it usually becomes a 12-18 hour process. It takes an inmate approximately 6-8 hours to get booked in, and another 6-8 hours to get released once the bond is posted at the jail. If you are considering posting bail for someone who is located at an LA police department or a Sheriffs substation we recommend you decide quickly. The LA County Jail has been known to take up to 36 hours to release a person even after their bond has been posted. It is a much easier process to post bail at a smaller city jail or police department.

A common misconception is that bail can only be posted after the inmate sees a judge. This is only true in very serious felony cases. The bail amount is pre-determined by the Los Angeles Bail Schedule.
